Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the product?

Looking back on our preliminary task now we notice some obvious errors that we had made and some clear use of good cinematography and continuity editing. There is a large difference between this and our final thriller, here we can see a huge improvement in our work.

At the very start of the small film, we looked at using a match on action as we had not used this skill before. We used it at the very beginning and it worked out well. We spend a rather long time making sure the door opened at the same time from both side and this time paid off as it is one that we are proud of. This part of the film is very static and the shot of the door on its own was left for too long. It appears that this part looks like it is not part of the film and it does not flow correctly.

The lack of movement in this is something that we would change if we were to do this again. Everyone is very still and does not show a realistic character to the camera. The script I had wrote was presented well however the shot reverse shot could have been more interesting. Even though a shot reverse shot is something that is very basic, the actors could have given the characters more life and expression to make this more intersting. The sound was also something we tried to work on as this but had trouble with the lenth of the cable. In one part you can hear the microphone being moved  on the table where it is hidden. Even though this is only a small error it is something we had struggled with in a previous exercise (sound exercise- The Footsteps) where we couldn't fit the camera in without it making a cracking sound when someone talked or moved. In our final we managed to fix this problem

The cinematography we used during filming the preliminary task was very basic. We used shot reverse shot to film the dialogue between Freddie and Carl, a match on action at the beginning ,middle shots and a point of view shot at the very end. The match on action was good as previously spoke about. However, the high shot we used at the beginning of the dialogue we used a high angle shot where Carl was looking down at Freddie. We did this as Carl was the character who killed someone in the end. After looking back at this we realise that this could be something we should have looked at in more detail as Freddie's character was the teacher and this should have been where we show the teacher as the dominant of the two. This shows how the task was not planned as well as we though it was. We see this throughout the shot reverse shot where the angled shots are in the wrong place. At the end of the dialogue we change to where Carl tried to walk out but he is held down by Freddie's character. Here is another error we found as freddie looks like he is jumping out of his seat instead of just getting up calmly. To change this we would have added another shot on Freddie just getting up. This is followed by Carl's arm being in two very different places between shots. This is something we noticed during editing and we did not have time to change. This does make the film look very unprofessional.

Lighting quality is another thing we had no control of however this also looked very unprofessional. Thought-out the whole task, the lighting changes slightly as we had windows in the room and the sun was going in and out of the clouds. The classroom lights were very poor for filing as they were high up and brass bassed. This did not help us film the task as it just looked poorly lit. At the very end we used a point of view shot to capture the action of carl running out of the classroom. The lighting during this was very poor as a window managed to wash out all the colour and we can not see Freddie running down the stairs. In out final piece, we did not have this problem as we filmed outside in daylight. The filing of our final piece took just over 3 hours and during this time the sun didn't not change and the lighting stayed consistent.

The quality of sound during our preliminary task was good and bad. We managed to capture the sound of the door opening well at the beginning of our preliminary task well, this is due to the continuity editing we spent so much time on. Throughout the task, the room gave the dialogue an 'echo' sound and this did not help us when it came to using the microphone. The sound is also unsteady as the tone of the characters voices changes and the placement of the microphone changed. This left us with an unsteady sound throughout the whole task. We did not experience this problem during our final piece as we used the microphone that was on the camera to capture any dialogue we used. The very end line was the only issue I can see in out final thriller as the wind had an effect on the camera and this left a musky sound underneath the dialogue which did sound lightly unprofessional.

Our final piece was very different in regards to cinermatography. We used a variety of shots through out the whole thriller and experienced no real issues with filming. The quality of shot was good. The camera was kept on the tripod when filming apart from the point of view and they were all steady. We added a chase scene in the middle of our thriller using a dog which is something we though we would have problems with but it turned out to be easier to film with than working around the classroom set up in our preliminary task. We managed to keep track of our props and continuity in out thriller and we experienced no problems with having car doors left open or different clothing, whereas in out preliminary task we sound very small continuity errors that we had clearly learnt from.

Overall I fell that we have improved a great deal since our preliminary task and have learnt a lot from our mistakes in previous exercises. Our final thriller is something where we have greatly improved on and we all contributed to make it a success.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/addres your audience?

Our thriller holds hte audiences attention by using many different thriller conventions, general film conventions and our own knowledge. Through distinct research in the Film Inductry and looking at many different types of thrillers we manages to put together a thriller that holds out target audence's attetion and other audiences attention.

Our opening holds the attention of the audience because it uses unusual aspects. We decided to use a dog in our thriller as it is something unusual and makes us stand out from other thrillers that are in the thriller community. Our characters are also very distinct. Freddies character portracys a sly personality, people would be more inclned to find out more about him then if the character was boring. They may also want to know more about how the dog will end up and what will hapen to it. People are normally more concerned for he life and wellfare of the animal in a film than the other humans, this may make people more interested.

Another reason why they would be interested in the opening in our thriller is due to the cliffhanger at the end. After the line of my character 'Yeah, It's done.' the audience are left on an unknown to what happens next. This is also a contibuting factor. This also happens in a unique location. Our thriller is located in a park which is nothing but a regualr park. Most morden day thrillers are set in a business building. This makes ours different.

A reason why the audence would want to watch the whole thriller continues from my preivious reason. The cliffhanger would leave us a good starting point to make the real film. People would then be satisfied to see the next part of the film. the character of the dog keeps people interested. As stated before people are usually more interested in the animal welfare than human.
